Formation of Sigma (σ) and Pi (π) Bonds in Ethene In ethene (C₂H₄), each carbon atom undergoes sp² hybridisation, forming three sp² hybrid orbitals arranged in a trigonal planar geometry (120° bond angle). Two sp² orbitals form sigma (σ) bonds with hydrogen atoms. One sp² orbital forms a sigma (σ) bond with the other carbon atom. The remaining unhybridised p orbitals overlap sideways to form a pi (π) bond above and below the molecular plane. Thus, the carbon–carbon double bond (C=C) in ethene consists of one σ bond and one π bond. #Ethene #SigmaBond #PiBond #ChemicalBonding #OrganicChemistry #Hybridization #sp2Hybridisation #DoubleBond #MolecularStructure #ChemistryConcepts #IITJEE #NEETPreparation #NarayanaCoachingCenter #STEMEducation
